Suburban Ways
Episode 90
The residents say their farewell to Martha.
Scene: The Badhman’s
Mickey Smith sat doing his tie. Hannah peered around the door and looked at him. He now realised his beloved wife had passed away. Hannah closed the door quietly. Lizzie passed the corridor. “Is everything okay?”
“So, so” she said. She sighed and walked away with Lizzie.
Scene: The Robinson’s
All the Robinsons and the Harris’s stood at the doorway. “All here” said Jackson. Joyce nodded and led the family out one by one into the street. The horse and carriage stood waiting and three hearses were there waiting for their occupants.
Scene: The Church
Ken, Jason, Mickey, Steve, Terrance and Jackson all stood waiting to take the coffin in which Martha lay. Jasmine and Joyce headed into the church first followed by Cody, Adele and Margaret. The men followed through with the song ‘The Rose’ by Westlife.
They placed the coffin on the stand and they went to sit down. Father Dominick stood up on the dais
“We are all gathered to say goodbye to our sister Martha Jane Robinson, she will be sent to our angels. Ken will now say a eulogy to his beloved sister”
Ken walked onto the dias.
“Martha, what can I say, she was there for us always when we needed her a loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend. We shared tenderly moments but sometimes bicker as most siblings do. She knew that in her own little way she grew as a person but sometimes she needed our help. Maybe we didn’t provide our help enough but what I do know is that she always knew deep down that we were there in her heart. She longed to be a mother one day and she knew what she wanted but she would now not get that chance. However, she was a good aunt to Cody and always looked after him. Take a moment to remember and cherish those memories you had with Martha dear in your hearts as for now she ascends with the angels.” Ken turns to Martha’s picture. “Goodbye dear sister” said Ken and stepped back down.
Dominick reads the sermon.
“Now Adele and Jackson will read a poem before burial”
I miss your laughter, fun, and gentleness.
I miss the things I used to do for you.
I miss the time, now filled with emptiness,
When each day was a stage for something new.
I miss your love, though mine for you remains,
A passion with no outlet to the sea,
A teardrop in a desert, that contains
What's left of my maternal ecstasy.
I miss your presence, like a silent chord
That anchored even solitude in grace.
I miss, for my love's labor, the reward
Of seeing some small pleasure in your face.
All these I miss, and yet they are all here
Within my heart, far more than I can bear.
They all begin to depart all the residents follow the coffin and the Robinson’s.
The Church Yard
“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust” Joyce throws soil followed by the rest of the Robinson’s and family and friends follow.
Mickey places flowers, as he is the last and kneels down and places his hand on her grave.
“Goodbye my love” he says and sighed.
